Global Granite MA FAQ

Have a countertop or stone material-related question? We have the answer. Check out these FAQs and tips and give us a call today for more information!

  • Why should I select granite countertops?

Stone countertops are scratch and heat resistant and will add beauty and value to your home. Natural stone is also a timeless product of nature that will add character and warmth to your home.

  • Why should I view my granite slabs?

Granite is a product of nature and therefore is not completely consistent. Each color is unique and may vary from bundle to bundle and to some degree, slab to slab. To ensure you are happy with the color selected, Global Granite MA recommends you view your selected material before installation.

  • What is the cost difference between granite, engineered stone, and solid surface?

The cost difference is based on color selection, sink selection, size of the countertop, and specific details of the job. The best way to determine the difference in cost is to contact your sales representative at Global Granite.

  • Why does granite have to be sealed and how often does granite need to be sealed?

Because natural stone is porous, the sealant acts as a barrier between liquids/food and the stone. Global Granite will seal the countertops after installation but recommends sealant to be reapplied every 6-12 months to maintain the beauty of the stone.

  • What maintenance is involved with honed countertops?

Honed stone countertops are extremely porous and more susceptible to staining. Global Granite will apply two (2) coats of sealant on the countertops, but future maintenance is the responsibility of the homeowner. Global Granite recommends that honed countertops be sealed every 2-4 months.

  • What is quartz?

Quartz is an engineered stone, made from a combination of natural crystals and resin. Quartz countertops are very durable and long-lasting. Quartz is nonporous so it does not require the sealing that granite and other natural stones require yearly.

  • Why is quartz good for kitchen countertops?

Quartz is a nonporous material, making it resilient against dirt, moisture, and germs. Also, because of its durable materials, it is resistant to scratches, dents, scuffs, and burns.

Stone Care Tips

  • Regularly clean your countertop surfaces with a damp cloth. Dry the countertops to avoid dull patches where hard water and soap residues may have been left behind during use. A light neutral (PHA) detergent (such as Ivory) may be used.
  • It's always safe to use a commercially approved granite cleaner. Avoid the use of abrasive cleaners, scouring pads, bleach, or ammonia products. These precautions are to prevent the breakdown of your granite sealant.
  • Cutting foods on the countertop will not scratch the granite but will blunt your knives quickly. Use of a separate cutting board is recommended.
  • Hot saucepans up to 350 degrees can be placed on your granite countertop without damaging the surface. Use of a hot pad or trivet is recommended for safe measure.
  • Granite should be sealed every 6-12 months, depending on usage.
